“Do you love the fresh scent of paper, ink, and glue? We sure do! That’s why we created New Book Smell in a can. Regardless of whether you download your e-books from the Kindle Store or Project Gutenberg, New Book Smell will bring back those long lost memories of your favorite local bookstore. With New Book Smell your friends will never know that you’re reading an e-book.” We also love to touch magazines, to rumple them, to smell them, to take them with us, to throw them away or to keep them in our bookshelfs. But sadly this “New Book Smell” is only a fake product - but a very funny and meaningful, too. Via
News from our members: Calin from DieNacht Magazine is working on a book about Artzines and independent magazines. “The book will feature, of course, Magazines and Artzines, but also Zine festivals, online and real shops where to buy such magazines, ways of distribution, and so on. And I want to talk to the makers, to research about the motivation of doing these (mostly) non-commercial magazines. There will also exist a kind of catalogue/list with all magazines and Artzines I know about, including a cover picture and short information. So it will be a real compendium, and as there is no similar publication about Artzines and small circulation magazines, I think it is time and a great chance to introduce this still underground medium to the wide public.” If you want to participate download a short questionaire here.
For everybody who could not make it to the international magazine symposium Colophon 2009 in Luxembourg - this book is a good consolation: “We Make Magazines explores magazine culture and celebrates the energy and visual dynamite that can be found outside the publishing mainstream. Edited by passionate magazine connoisseurs, it features exclusive interviews with international experts and illustrates the diverse topics that are fundamental to magazine publishing. While showcasing more than 100 independent magazines from 30 countries around the globe with stunning spreads and layouts, it also includes a directory to over 700 of the most cutting-edge independent magazines. We Make Magazines is an essential read for everyone with a passion for print.” And yap, this is true! - 36 Euro, 320 pages, published at Gestalten.
