Berlin Haushoch #3 / 2009
BERLIN HAUSHOCH presents people, housing and living spaces, and creates an image of Berlin that is surprising and stirring. There is no district of Berlin, which is more emblematic of the “Good Old West” than Charlottenburg.
It used to be the center of West-Berlin, stronghold of the students’ movement of ’68, but also the living cliché of the genuine bourgeoisie of Berlin. But what has come of Charlottenburg today?
In issue N°3, the three publishers, Alexandra Bald, Ana Lessing, and Esra Rotthoff, examine this question photographically. Thereto, selected journalists and authors present their texts. The ABC of Charlottenburg by Irene Fritsch is to close possible gaps of knowledge about the district. Waltraud Schwab writes about sex in public while playboy Rolf Eden disposes of his garment and explains to Oliver Gehrs why Munich and Hamburg are mere villages and women are even more beautiful today than they used to be. A visit to the “abbey of pink nuns” is to be witnessed, as also shady uptown Charlottenburg, where musician Don Cali of Culcha Candela came of age.
BERLIN HAUSHOCH originated as an art project and still is a non-profit project. The fact that already the first two issues earned a considerable success accounts for the high quality of the magazine. The concept of the magazine actively seeks to create a new aesthetic language, beyond the present hype of metropolitan magazines. With subtle irony it trespasses photographic clichés and emphasizes that which is shy of the limelight.
Facts & Figures
Mission Statement: Berlin has many faces. Nowhere does its diversity show more prominently than in its 23 different districts. BERLIN HAUSHOCH adds a fresh feature to the city’s versatility. In each issue, the award-winning magazine BERLIN HAUSHOCH dives into the depths of one of these urban microcosms and reels in new prospects of a metropolis to be manifested within its pages. After Marzahn and Wedding, the 3rd issue portrays Charlottenburg. The everyday aspects as well as the particularity of this district are presented via photography, illustrations, texts, and a graphic language that is visually referential to its specific surroundings.
